This guidance note, published by the Global Resilience Partnership in December 2023, examines 24 marginal, small-scale initiatives termed "Seeds" within African food systems. The Resilient Agriculture Innovations for Nature (RAIN) Challenge is an initiative by the Global Resilience Partnership (GRP) and Munich Re Foundation to identify and scale innovative, nature-positive agricultural solutions in East Africa. The program provides not-for-profit organizations with mentoring, leadership training, and connections to investors to transform seed-level ideas into sustainable business models that enhance biodiversity and climate resilience.

This case study describes a community-led initiative in Kumbi Kebele, Ethiopia, where women formed the Biftu Beri village savings and loan association (VSLA) to combat climate change impacts. Supported by the NGO Farm Africa, the group integrates forest conservation, indigenous tree planting, and agroforestry with a micro-finance model to improve household livelihoods and environmental resilience.

This case study describes the work of Mountain Harvest, an intermediary organization in Uganda that supports 850 smallholder coffee farmers in the Mount Elgon region. The organization utilizes a commercial business model focused on premium, organic, and ethically traded coffee to help farmers bypass commodity pricing and secure higher prices. To combat climate change and seasonality, Mountain Harvest promotes regenerative agriculture and income diversification through additional crops and livestock. The organization also seeks to improve the livelihoods of 'invisible workers,' specifically female hand sorters who often earn less than $1 a day.

This case study describes how a community-led savings initiative, the Samabay Samiti, established by World Vision in the village of Datinakhali, Bangladesh, helps residents break a cycle of debt caused by frequent climate-induced disasters. By providing microloans and livelihood diversification training, the program enables members—particularly women—to build assets and achieve financial self-resilience.

This case study documents the community-led efforts of Kamarkhali village in north-central Bangladesh to combat accelerating riverbank erosion along the Someshwari River. Through the formation of a resistance committee, non-violent protests, and multiple attempts to build embankments, the community eventually secured government assistance to construct a sandbag embankment completed in April 2021.
