Women are leading the charge in addressing climate impacts in Karonga, Malawi

This case study describes the climate vulnerabilities of Karonga District in Malawi and highlights a women-led initiative by the Green Girls Platform to empower local women and girls through climate education and green entrepreneurship.

• Karonga District in Northern Malawi faces extreme weather events, including droughts and floods, which result in unsafe drinking water, poor sanitation, and health risks. The impact of these events is exacerbated by a lack of community climate education, and the severity varies based on income, housing status, and energy use.
• In Mbwefu Village, floods and strong winds in January 2023 displaced residents, leading to increased cholera cases and malnutrition due to overcrowded shelters and lack of sanitation. More than 500 households are displaced annually, with women and children most affected and facing higher risks of sexual exploitation at campsites.
• Patricia Chibaka, supported by the female-led Green Girls Platform, established a community club in Karonga to train women and girls on climate change, leadership, and early warning systems. The initiative has trained 35 young women and girls in tree nursery management and the production of briquettes as an alternative energy source.
• The Green Girls Platform initiative has enabled participants to plant 10,000 tree seedlings across more than seven schools and generate income by selling both seedlings and briquettes. This effort aims to overcome cultural barriers that limit women's participation in leadership and decision-making.
