1.  Who we are and what these terms do

1.1 The Climate Insights Directory (the “Site”) is operated by the Meliore Foundation, and these Terms of Use govern your access to and use of the Site, its content and its application programming interface (the “API”). By using the Site or the API you accept these terms. If you do not accept them, please do not use the Site.

1.2 The Site is provided free of charge and in the public interest. We do not charge for access, and nothing in these terms creates a paid service, a subscription or a service level commitment.

1.3 Our Privacy Notice at this link explains how we handle personal data, and our AI Transparency Notice found here explains how AI is used to produce content on the Site. Both form part of these terms.

2.  What the Site contains

2.1 The Site brings together climate-related documents published by research bodies and civil society organisations, and provides tools for finding and navigating them. Its content falls into four categories, which are treated differently under these terms.

2.2 We select what to include according to published criteria at https://climateinsightsdirectory.org/about-us. We do not claim the collection is complete, representative or balanced, and section 4.4 explains the known limits of its coverage.

3.  Using the Site

3.1 You may access the Site, read it, search it, and download and reuse its content in accordance with sections 6 and 7. You may do so for any purpose unless these terms say otherwise.

3.2 You must not:

(a) use the Site in a way that damages, disables or overburdens it, or interferes with anyone else's use of it;

(b) collect content from the Site by automated means other than through the API, or in a way that circumvents the API's technical limits;

(c) remove, obscure, alter or defeat any marking, label, metadata or watermark indicating that content was generated by an AI system (see 8.3);

(d) present Generated Content as having been written or verified by a person, as our expert assessment, or as our institutional position;

(e) use the Site or its content to make, support or imply a claim about the environmental performance, conduct or compliance of any organisation, except by reference to the underlying Source Document (see 4.5);

(f) use the Site to break the law, to infringe anyone's rights, or in a way that is defamatory, harassing or misleading; or

(g) attempt to identify individuals from the content or combine it with other data for that purpose.

3.3 We may suspend or restrict access to the Site or the API, in whole or in part, where we reasonably consider it necessary to protect the Site, its users or third parties, or to comply with law. Where we do so other than in an emergency, we will give reasonable notice.

4.  AI-generated content — what you need to know

4.1 Generated Content on the Site is produced by an AI system and is not reviewed by a person before publication. It is labelled wherever it appears. Our AI Transparency Notice sets out how the system works, where it runs and how content is marked.

4.2 Generated Content is a tool for finding and navigating documents. It is not a substitute for reading the Source Document, and you should not treat it as an exact account of what a Source Document says. Before relying on, quoting, citing or acting on anything in Generated Content, check it against the Source Document, which we link to in every case.

4.3 You acknowledge in particular that Generated Content may:

(a) attribute a statement, figure, target or commitment to an organisation that did not make it, or conflate the positions of two or more organisations;

(b) assert something the Source Document does not support, or state it with more certainty than the Source Document does;

(c) omit caveats, methodology, uncertainty or dissent recorded in the Source Document; and

(d) be inaccurate, incomplete or out of date in ways not listed here.

4.4 Coverage limits. Our collection is weighted towards English-language sources and research based approaches to climate topics. Coverage of other languages, regions and perspectives is less complete. This affects both what the Site says and what it is able to surface at all.

4.5 Claims are the source's, not ours. Where Generated Content restates an emissions figure, a reduction target, an offset assessment, a sustainability rating or any similar claim, that claim is made by the author of the Source Document. It is not our assessment, our endorsement or our verification of it. We make no environmental claim of our own through the Site.

4.6 Not advice. Nothing on the Site is legal, financial, investment, scientific or policy advice, and it is not offered as a basis for any decision. You are responsible for obtaining professional advice appropriate to your circumstances.

5.  Source Documents and rights holders

5.1 Source Documents remain the property of their authors and publishers. Nothing on the Site transfers any right in them to you or to us. Where we reproduce a Source Document in whole or in part, we do so under the licence the publisher has applied to it, or under an exception permitted by law, and we record which applies.

5.2 Where you reuse a Source Document you must comply with its own licence terms. Our terms do not enlarge what that licence permits.

5.3 If you are the author or publisher of a Source Document and you consider that it should be corrected, removed, de-indexed, or should not have been collected, write to us at info@climateinsightsdirectory.org identifying the document. We will respond within 10 working days and, where we agree or where the position is unclear, we will remove or de-index it while we look into it.

5.4 We respect machine-readable reservations of rights, including those expressed through robots.txt and equivalent standards, and we will honour a reservation notified to us under 5.3 whether or not it was machine-readable at the time of collection.

6.  Generated Content and Directory Data — what you may do with them

6.1 We publish Generated Content and Directory Data under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) licence, to the extent that any copyright, database right or similar right subsists in them and is owned by us.

6.2 We do not warrant that any such right subsists or that we own it. The legal status of material produced by an AI system is unsettled in several jurisdictions, and the licence in 6.1 is granted for the avoidance of doubt rather than as a representation of ownership.

6.3 If you republish Generated Content, you must:

(a) retain any indication that the content was generated by an AI system, in a form at least as prominent as the one we use (see 8.3); and

(c) not present it in a way that suggests we endorse you, your publication or any claim you make.

6.4 The licence in 6.1 does not extend to our name, logo, trademarks or visual identity, which may not be used without our written permission.

7.  Site Software

7.1 The software used for theuser interface is created with software licensed under MIT License, the underlying data system is created with software under the Apache License, Version 2.0. Your use of that software is governed by the MIT or Apache 2.0 licence and not by these terms.

7.2 The MIT and Apache 2.0 licences applies to the software only. It does not grant any right in Source Documents, Generated Content, Directory Data, or our name and marks.

8.  The API

8.1 The API is provided free of charge for reasonable use. We may set and change rate limits, require an API key, and suspend keys that place a disproportionate load on the Site or are used in breach of these terms.

8.2 The API is provided as it stands. We may change or discontinue endpoints, fields and response formats. We will give 10 days' notice of a breaking change where practicable, but you should not build anything on the API that cannot tolerate change without notice.

8.3 Preserving AI markings is a condition of use. API responses identify which fields contain Generated Content. If you republish those fields, you must retain that indication. This is not merely a term of ours: where you publish AI-generated text to inform the public on a matter of public interest, you have your own obligations under Article 50 of Regulation (EU) 2024/1689. Our marking does not discharge them and does not make your publication compliant. 

8.4 You must not use the API to reconstruct a substantial part of the Directory Data for the purpose of offering a competing directory that omits the AI markings required by 8.3.

9.  Availability

9.1 We aim to keep the Site available but do not promise that it will be uninterrupted, error-free or secure. We may suspend it for maintenance, and we may change, restructure or withdraw any part of it, including individual pages, at any time.

9.2 We may stop operating the Site altogether. If we decide to do so we will give reasonable public notice and will use reasonable efforts to make the Directory Data available in a reusable form beforehand.

10.  Disclaimers

10.1 The Site and its content are provided “as is” and “as available”. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we exclude all warranties, conditions and representations that are not expressly set out in these terms, including as to accuracy, completeness, currency, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement.

10.2 Without limiting 10.1, we do not warrant that Generated Content accurately reflects any Source Document, that Source Documents are authentic, current or complete, or that the Site covers any particular organisation, jurisdiction, sector or topic.

10.3 The Site links to and reproduces material published by third parties. We do not control that material and are not responsible for it. 

11.  Liability

11.1 Nothing in these terms limits or excludes our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or for any other liability that cannot lawfully be limited or excluded.

11.2 Subject to 11.1, and to the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any loss or damage arising from your use of, or reliance on, the Site or its content, including any decision taken, statement published, or claim made or repeated on the basis of Generated Content.

11.3 Subject to 11.1, and to the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for loss of profit, revenue, business, goodwill, reputation, anticipated savings, or for any indirect or consequential loss.

11.4 If you are a consumer. Sections 10 and 11 apply only to the extent permitted by the consumer protection law of your country of residence. They do not affect your statutory rights, and nothing in these terms requires you to give up a protection that the law of your habitual residence gives you.

12.  If you think something is wrong

12.1If a description or summary misrepresents a document, or attributes it to the wrong organisation, tell us at info@climateinsightsdirectory.org. We treat attribution errors as our highest correction priority.

12.2If you are named or described in content on the Site and consider it inaccurate or unfair, write to us at info@climateinsightsdirectory.org setting out what is wrong. We will review it and, where we agree, correct or remove it. This is in addition to any right you have under data protection law, which our Privacy Notice explains.

12.3We keep a record of corrections made following a report under 12.1 or 12.2 .

13.  Changes to these terms

13.1 We may change these terms. The version in force is always the one published on this page, with its version number and effective date at the top.

13.2 Where a change materially affects your rights, in particular a change to section 6 or section 8, we will publish notice of it at least 10 days before it takes effect, and will keep superseded versions available at http://climateinsightsdirectory.org/terms-of-use

14.  Law and disputes

14.1 These terms and any dispute arising out of them are governed by the law of Belgium, excluding its conflict of laws rules.

14.2 The courts of Belgium have exclusive jurisdiction. If any provision of these terms is held unenforceable, the rest continues in effect and the unenforceable provision is replaced by an enforceable one that comes closest to its intended effect.
