Regional Research Call – Africa START

The CDKN's Africa START research call provides £300,000 for 16 projects and £150,000 for management and a learning forum. The funded research addresses diverse climate risks across Africa, including forest degradation in Nigeria and Cameroon, water management in Benin and Ethiopia, and coastal lagoon sensitivity in North Africa, all aimed at enhancing food security and rural livelihoods.

• CDKN is funding 16 research awards focused on the effects of global environmental change on food security and agriculture in Africa, with a total funding value of £300,000, plus £150,000 for management and a regional learning forum.
• Research in West Africa focuses on forest and land management, including studying the link between ecosystem services and food security in Southwest Nigeria, addressing the tradeoffs of REDD (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) in Southwest Cameroon, and improving water management in the inland valleys of Southern Benin to combat crop failure caused by floods and low rainfall.
• In East Africa, projects are investigating the decline of fruiting trees in Uganda's Budongo Forest Reserve, the impact of climate change on water resources and human health in Ethiopia's Rift Valley, and the effects of temperature increases and extreme weather on crop yields in the Lake Victoria Basin.
• Southern African research initiatives target the improvement of seasonal climate forecasts for farmers in South Africa, the integration of traditional and scientific knowledge for weather forecasting in Botswana's Okavango Delta, and the adaptation of farming systems in Zimbabwe's Hwange District where agriculture and tourism are co-dependent.
• Coastal and urban research includes analyzing the role of urban and peri-urban agriculture (UPA) in East and West African cities, integrating indigenous flood prediction with scientific methods in the Niger Delta, assessing the impact of climate change on food security in South Africa's Eastern Cape, and evaluating the sensitivity of North African coastal lagoons to warming and sediment flow changes.
