Friends of the Earth Latin America and the Caribbean (ATALC) condemns the assassination of Sergio Rojas, an indigenous defender of the Bribri of Salitre territory in Costa Rica, who was shot 15 times on March 18, 2019. The murder followed complaints filed by Rojas regarding land seizures by non-indigenous persons and occurred despite 2015 precautionary measures from the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR). ATALC demands an investigation into the perpetrators and an explanation for the lack of protection for indigenous rights defenders.
