We denounce the murder of Jehry Rivera Rivera in Costa Rica

Friends of the Earth International condemns the February 24, 2020, murder of Jehry Rivera Rivera, a Naso Bröran leader in Costa Rica who opposed land usurpation and the Diquís Hydroelectric Project. The organization highlights a pattern of violence, including the 2019 murder of Sergio Rojas Ortiz, and criticizes the Costa Rican government for failing to implement Inter-American Commission on Human Rights precautionary measures designed to protect the Térraba and Salitre territories.

• Jehry Rivera Rivera, a Naso Bröran indigenous leader, was murdered on 24 February 2020 after advocating for indigenous autonomy against land usurpers and the Diquís Hydroelectric Project.
• The Costa Rican government failed to respond to warnings about armed intrusions in the Palmira de Cabagra and Crun D´bonn communities and did not comply with April 30, 2015, Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) precautionary measures (PM 321-12) intended to protect the Térraba and Salitre territories.
• The murder of Jehry Rivera follows the March 18, 2019, murder of Sergio Rojas Ortiz, illustrating a broader trend of attacks and criminalization against indigenous movements, such as the National Front of Indigenous Peoples, in Costa Rica.
