We denounce the murder of Jehry Rivera Rivera in Costa Rica

Friends of the Earth International denounces the murder of indigenous leader Jehry Rivera Rivera in Costa Rica, highlighting a pattern of violence against indigenous peoples and government failure to implement human rights protections.

• Jehry Rivera Rivera, an indigenous leader of the Naso Bröran people, was murdered on 24 February 2020. Rivera had advocated for indigenous autonomy against land usurpers and extractive initiatives, specifically the Diquís Hydroelectric Project.
• The murder occurred following warnings issued on 23 February regarding the intrusion of non-indigenous armed individuals and intimidation within the Crun D´bonn and Palmira de Cabagra communities in Térraba. The government is accused of failing to respond effectively and failing to comply with precautionary measures issued by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) on April 30, 2015 (PM 321-12) intended to protect the Salitre and Térraba indigenous territories.
• The death of Jehry Rivera follows the murder of Sergio Rojas Ortiz on 18 March 2019, despite prior warnings to national authorities about death threats. These events are presented as evidence of the helplessness of Indigenous Peoples facing daily attacks across Costa Rica and the criminalization of social movements, including the National Front of Indigenous Peoples.
