Denuncia y repudio por el asesinato de Sergio Rojas en Costa Rica

A statement by Friends of the Earth Latin America and the Caribbean (ATALC) denouncing the murder of Sergio Rojas, a Costa Rican indigenous defender of the Bribri territory of Salitre.

• Sergio Rojas, an indigenous defender of the Bribri territory of Salitre in southern Costa Rica, was shot 15 times at his residence in the community of Yeri on the night of Monday, March 18, 2019.
• Hours before his death, Sergio Rojas and other community members filed complaints with the prosecutor's office regarding land usurpation by non-indigenous people and ongoing threats that had lacked effective responses from Costa Rican authorities, despite precautionary measures issued by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) for Salitre.
• ATALC calls on the Costa Rican government to expedite investigations to find the intellectual and material perpetrators and demands explanations as to why indigenous representatives lack special protection despite IACHR precautionary measures.
