Denuncia y repudio por el asesinato de Sergio Rojas en Costa Rica

The document is a statement by Friends of the Earth Latin America and the Caribbean (ATALC) condemning the murder of Sergio Rojas, a Bribri indigenous defender in Costa Rica. Rojas was shot 15 times in his home on March 18, 2019, shortly after filing complaints regarding land usurpation by non-indigenous people. The organization highlights the lack of effective state protection despite precautionary measures from the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) and demands an end to impunity and the recognition of indigenous autonomy to prevent further violence.

• Sergio Rojas, an indigenous defender of the Bribri territory of Salitre in southern Costa Rica, was shot 15 times at his residence in the community of Yeri on the night of Monday, March 18, 2019.
• Prior to his death, Rojas and other community members had filed complaints with the prosecutor's office regarding land usurpation by non-indigenous individuals and ongoing threats that had not been effectively addressed by Costa Rican authorities.
• The assassination occurred despite the existence of precautionary measures issued by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) for Salitre, indicating a failure in special protection for indigenous representatives.
