Condamnation de l’assassinat de Sergio Rojas au Costa Rica

Friends of the Earth Latin America and the Caribbean (ATALC) condemns the murder of Sergio Rojas, a defender of the Bribri people's territory in Costa Rica. The statement highlights that Rojas was killed shortly after filing a complaint regarding land appropriation by non-indigenous people, despite existing precautionary measures from the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR). ATALC calls on the Costa Rican government to end impunity and protect the autonomy and self-determination of indigenous peoples.

• Sergio Rojas, a defender of the Bribri people's territory in the Salitre region of southeast Costa Rica, was killed by 15 gunshots at his home in the village of Yeri on the night of March 18, 2019.
• The assassination occurred shortly after Rojas and other indigenous community members filed a complaint with the public prosecutor's office regarding the appropriation of their lands by non-indigenous individuals and years of threats that went unanswered by Costa Rican authorities.
• The crime took place despite precautionary measures requested in 2015 by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR/CIDH) for the Salitre region.
