Condamnation de l’assassinat de Sergio Rojas au Costa Rica

A statement by Friends of the Earth Latin America and the Caribbean (ATALC) condemning the murder of Sergio Rojas, a Costa Rican defender of indigenous rights and Bribri territory.

• Sergio Rojas, a defender of the rights of indigenous peoples and the Bribri territory in the Salitre region of southeast Costa Rica, was killed in his home in the village of Yeri on the night of Monday, March 18, 2019, after being shot 15 times.
• Prior to his death, Sergio Rojas and other indigenous community members had filed a complaint with the public prosecutor's office regarding the appropriation of their land by non-indigenous people and years of permanent threats that had not received an effective response from Costa Rican authorities.
• The murder occurred despite precautionary measures requested in 2015 by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) for the Salitre region. ATALC calls on the Costa Rican government to accelerate the investigation to find the intellectual and material authors of the crime and to combat impunity by respecting the autonomy of indigenous peoples.
