Condemnation of the assassination of Sergio Rojas in Costa Rica

Friends of the Earth Latin America and the Caribbean (ATALC) condemns the assassination of Sergio Rojas, an indigenous defender of the Bribri of Salitre territory in Costa Rica, who was shot 15 times on March 18, 2019. The murder followed complaints filed by Rojas regarding land seizures by non-indigenous persons and occurred despite 2015 precautionary measures from the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR). ATALC demands an investigation into the perpetrators and an explanation for the lack of protection for indigenous rights defenders.

• Sergio Rojas, an indigenous defender of Indigenous Peoples’ rights and the Bribri of Salitre territory in southern Costa Rica, was murdered on the night of Monday 18th March at his home in the community of Yeri, where he was shot 15 times.
• Hours before his death, Sergio Rojas and other community members filed complaints with the Public Prosecutor’s Office concerning the seizure of indigenous land by non-indigenous persons and years of threats that received no effective response from Costa Rican authorities.
• The assassination occurred despite precautionary measures issued in 2015 by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) for Salitre. ATALC calls on the Costa Rican government to investigate the perpetrators and explain the failure to provide special protection to Indigenous Peoples and their representatives.
