Condemnation of the assassination of Sergio Rojas in Costa Rica

Friends of the Earth Latin America and the Caribbean (ATALC) has issued a statement condemning the murder of Sergio Rojas, a Bribri indigenous defender in Costa Rica. Rojas was shot 15 times at his home on March 18, 2019, shortly after filing complaints regarding the seizure of indigenous land by non-indigenous persons. The organization highlights that the killing occurred despite precautionary measures issued by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) in 2015. ATALC demands that the Costa Rican government identify the perpetrators and address the systemic impunity and lack of protection for indigenous peoples fighting for territorial autonomy.

• Sergio Rojas, an indigenous defender of the Bribri of Salitre territory in southern Costa Rica, was murdered on March 18, 2019, after being shot 15 times at his home in the community of Yeri.
• The assassination occurred hours after Rojas and other community members filed complaints with the Public Prosecutor’s Office concerning the seizure of indigenous land by non-indigenous individuals and a history of threats that received no effective response from authorities.
• The killing took place despite the existence of precautionary measures issued in 2015 by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) intended to protect the Salitre territory.
