WATER AND POVERTY LINKAGES IN AFRICA: SENEGAL CASE STUDY

This case study analyzes the relationship between water management and poverty in Senegal. While the country has made progress toward drinking water targets, sanitation remains a challenge, especially in rural areas. Agriculture consumes the vast majority of water withdrawals, and there is an increasing, potentially unsustainable reliance on groundwater. The report highlights that meeting food security goals will require nearly tripling water for agricultural food supply. Furthermore, climate change poses severe risks, with sea level rise potentially impacting 5-10% of GDP and 10% of the population.

• Senegal has made significant progress toward MDG targets for drinking water, but sanitation targets are lagging, particularly in rural areas. While the country is considered on the right track for water supply, rural access to sanitation requires additional financial commitments.
• Agriculture is the dominant consumer of water in Senegal, accounting for 92% of annual withdrawals for irrigation. Total renewable water resources per capita decreased from 6,623 m3 in 1980 to 3,665 m3 in 2005 due to population growth.
