• The Action Research on Community Based Adaptation in Bangladesh (ARCAB) project developed a participatory monitoring and evaluation (M&E) tool for community adaptation initiatives. This tool has since been used internationally to assess projects in Namibia (funded by UNDP) and Ethiopia (Save the Children).
• Bangladesh has demonstrated high-level political will to integrate climate change into development planning, evidenced by the Cabinet Review Committee on climate change led by the prime minister and the 2009 Bangladesh Climate Change Strategy and Action Plan (BCCSAP).
• Despite political commitment, Bangladesh faces a challenge in translating will into policy due to an information gap regarding detailed climate impacts and responses. To support adaptation, the country utilizes funding mechanisms such as the Bangladesh Climate Change Trust Fund and the Bangladesh Climate Change Resilience Fund.
• Data from the 2010 Global Climate Risk Index indicates that between 1990 and 2008, Bangladesh suffered 8,241 deaths, annual damage costs of US$2.2 billion, and a GDP loss of 1.81 per cent.
