SEI strategy 2025–29

The 'SEI strategy 2025–29' outlines the Stockholm Environment Institute's strategic framework to address global environmental and sustainable development challenges. The strategy focuses on three primary impact areas—climate transitions, nature and resources, and health and wellbeing—while introducing 'accelerating implementation' as a new strategic outcome to move from policy goals to on-the-ground action.

• The 'Nature and resources' impact area focuses on climate-resilient water management, tackling deforestation via supply chain transparency, marine and coastal planning, resolving land-use trade-offs, governing critical raw materials, developing a circular bioeconomy, and shifting consumption patterns.
• The 'Health and wellbeing' impact area prioritizes gender and social equity, healthy city planning (clean air and green spaces), connecting health with water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), shifting food systems, strengthening human security regarding environment-related migration, and systemic use of the SDGs.
• SEI aims to diversify its funding to increase financial resilience, targeting a core funding level between 20% and 35% while increasing engagement with the philanthropic sector and improving bottom-up fundraising for research grants.
• The organization has set a specific environmental target to reduce air travel emissions—which account for approximately 85% of its total emissions—by 50% in tonnes of CO2-equivalent per full-time equivalent (FTE) by 2030 compared to 2017 levels.
• SEI utilizes a 'glocal' structure with research centres across seven countries and five continents to combine global expertise with local context and responsiveness.
