Emergence of Human Resilience in Coastal Ecosystems under Environmental Change

The authors argue for an integrated approach to resilience that bridges the gap between psychosocial traditions (focused on the family) and social-ecological approaches (focused on macro-systems). Using a combination of Antonovsky’s sense of coherence scale and narrative inquiry in the Sundarbans region of Bangladesh after the 2009 Cyclone Aila, the study finds that human resilience is a holistic and dynamic process driven by complex interactions between gender, education, livelihood, and social-ecological contexts.

• There is a significant gap in existing resilience research: psychosocial traditions focus on the family and immediate surroundings, while social-ecological approaches focus on macro-systems that stop at the family level, making a synthesis of these behavioral and social-ecological theories rare.
• Research in the Sundarbans region using quantitative analysis and life history narratives indicates that human resilience is a holistic and dynamic process resulting from complex interactions between variables including gender, education, and livelihood dimensions.
