Review of Current and Planned Adaptation Action in Namibia

Namibia, the driest country in sub-Saharan Africa, faces significant climate risks including rising temperatures and water scarcity. While the government has adopted a national climate change policy and identified six vulnerable sectors (water, agriculture, sea level rise/fisheries, tourism, health, and disaster risk management), adaptation efforts remain limited and heavily dependent on donor funding.

• Namibia is the driest country in sub-Saharan Africa, with 92% of its land classified as semi-arid, arid, or hyper-arid. Mean annual rainfall is below 250 mm, and the country faces significant water scarcity, with 83% of moisture evaporating.
• Temperature trends in Namibia show a clear increase of 1°C to 1.2°C over the last 50 years, with the north seeing greater increases. Future projections suggest temperatures could rise by 1.1°C by 2035, 2.5°C by 2065, and 4.5°C by 2100.
