Resilience Science Must-Knows

The 'Resilience Science Must-Knows' report, published by the Global Resilience Partnership, Stockholm Resilience Centre, and Future Earth, distills decades of resilience science into nine core principles for decision-makers. Developed through a collective effort involving over 120 researchers and 162 leaders, the document aims to bridge the gap between complex scientific research and actionable strategy across various sectors to help societies cope, adapt, and transform amid increasing global volatility.

• The report identifies nine 'Must-Knows' designed to provide a shared scientific foundation for decision-makers to build systemic resilience. These principles emphasize that resilience extends beyond 'bouncing back' to include coping, adapting, and transforming; the necessity of continuous learning and innovation; the role of diversity in persistence and adaptation; the importance of relationships, agency, and the management of trade-offs; and the critical need to address power imbalances and social inequalities to avoid reinforcing vulnerability.
• The 'Must-Knows' were developed through a multi-stage process to ensure scientific rigour and practical relevance. This included a survey of over 120 resilience researchers across disciplines such as sustainability science and economics, guidance from an editorial board of 20 scholars, a review of peer-reviewed literature, and feedback from 162 leaders representing 134 organisations in business, policy, and civil society.
• The document serves as a precursor to the 'Resilience Road to Action', a subsequent phase intended to translate these broad principles into sector-specific actionable guidelines. This future work will target areas including finance, health, urban development, and food and agriculture, providing evidence-based guidance tailored to specific contexts rather than prescribing individual actions.
