Resilience Science Must-Knows

The Global Resilience Partnership, in collaboration with the Stockholm Resilience Centre and Future Earth, has released the 'Resilience Science Must-Knows'. This report distills decades of resilience research into nine core principles to help leaders in government, business, and international institutions navigate overlapping crises and volatility. The principles emphasize that resilience involves more than 'bouncing back', requiring the management of trade-offs, the addressing of power imbalances, and the cultivation of diversity and continuous learning. These findings were developed through engagement with over 120 researchers and 162 decision-makers. The framework serves as a precursor to the 'Resilience Road to Action', which will translate these broad principles into sector-specific guidelines for areas such as health, finance, and urban development.

• The 'Resilience Science Must-Knows' consists of nine broad principles intended to guide decision-making and resilience strategies across different sectors and scales, reflecting the interconnected nature of complex systems.
• The nine core principles for resilience are: navigating accelerating risk; coping, adapting, and transforming; investing for future benefit; cultivating continuous learning and innovation; fostering diversity; nurturing relationships; governing and negotiating trade-offs; empowering agency; and addressing power imbalances.
• The framework was developed through a multi-disciplinary process involving a survey of over 120 resilience researchers, guidance from an editorial board of 20 scholars, a review of peer-reviewed literature, and feedback from 162 leaders representing 134 organisations.
• The project will transition into a second phase called the 'Resilience Road to Action', which aims to translate these general principles into evidence-based guidelines for specific sectors including finance, health, urban development, and food and agriculture.
