Enhancing climate change adaptation in the North Coast and Nile Delta Regions in Egypt

This case study describes the "Enhancing climate change adaptation in the North Coast and Nile Delta Regions in Egypt 2018-2025" project, co-financed by the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the Egyptian Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation. The project aims to mitigate coastal flooding risks caused by sea level rise and extreme storm events through physical infrastructure and strategic planning.

• The project aims to reduce coastal flooding risks in Egypt's North Coast through two primary outputs: the installation of 69 km of sand dune dikes across five vulnerable hotspots in the Nile Delta and the creation of an integrated coastal zone management (ICZM) plan for the entire North Coast.
• The total cost of the project is USD 105 million, with the Green Climate Fund (GCF) providing a grant of USD 31.4 million and the Egyptian Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation (MWRI) contributing the remaining USD 73.8 million.
• The project is designed to benefit 768,164 people directly in coastal areas and 16,900,000 people indirectly. It spans a seven-year lifespan from 2017 to 2025, with construction of coastal soft protection structures having started as of the latest implementation report.
• The project involves a multi-entity governance structure where the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency serves as the National Designated Authority (NDA) and the UNDP acts as the Accredited Entity (AE). Implementation involves the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation, the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation (MALR), and local communities and governorates in Port Said, Damietta, Beheira, Dakhalia, and Kafr ElSheikh.
