Report on Bangladesh Launch of the Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)

This report documents a series of three outreach events held in Dhaka, Bangladesh, from August 6 to 8, 2014, to launch and disseminate the findings of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fifth Assessment Report (AR5). The events, which included a press conference, a formal launch for policymakers, and a session for young leaders, aimed to translate the global scientific findings of the AR5 into the local context of Bangladesh to support national development planning and climate resilience.

• The IPCC's Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) identifies that South Asia is already experiencing climate change impacts, and further changes are inevitable in the coming decades. These changes pose significant challenges to growth and development in the region, although adaptation and low-carbon development options can provide immediate benefits and new economic opportunities.
• Bangladesh is highly vulnerable to climate change due to its exposure to extreme events and limited coping capacity. Specific risks include increased storm surges in low-lying coastal areas, riverine and urban floods, and health impacts such as cholera epidemics associated with El Nino and heat stress in urban populations.
• Sea level rise poses a critical threat to Bangladesh, with projections suggesting that approximately 17% of the country's landmass could be inundated if sea levels rise by one metre. This risk is further compounded by local tectonics and sedimentation.
• Bangladesh has demonstrated leadership in climate adaptation and disaster management, transitioning into a 'prepared nation' through investments in preparedness. Key national frameworks include the Bangladesh Climate Change Strategy and Action Plan (BCCSAP), the Bangladesh Climate Change Trust Fund (BCCTF), and the Bangladesh Climate Change Resilience Fund (BCCRF).
• There is a significant gap in the availability of peer-reviewed scientific publications from Bangladesh, despite a wealth of local research. This lack of published data limits the inclusion of country-specific information in IPCC reports, which rely primarily on peer-reviewed literature.
• Climate change is causing economic losses in Bangladesh estimated at nearly 1% of the GDP. The government spends approximately $100 million per year to address sustainable development and climate challenges.
