Climate and Development Outlook

• Agriculture is highly vulnerable to climate change, affecting approximately three quarters of Nepal's population. A CDKN-funded project managed by LI-BIRD and the CGIAR research programme identified context-appropriate climate-smart agricultural practices across the high mountains, mid-hills, and Terai plains to be integrated into local development plans.
• Nepal's hydroelectric sector, which provides about 90% of the country's electricity, is ill-prepared for current climate variability and water flow fluctuations. Future climate impacts are expected to manifest primarily as increased hazards, such as floods and glacial lake outburst floods, rather than changes in average energy generation.
