Weaving knowledge and action on climate change Impacts from CDKN’s Knowledge Accelerator, 2018-2021

The report details CDKN's efforts to bridge the gap between climate knowledge and action through regional programmes in Africa, Asia, and South America. Key initiatives include improving climate information on Wikipedia, tailoring IPCC reports for regional audiences, and mainstreaming gender into climate policy in countries like Peru, Ecuador, and Ethiopia. The network also focused on urban resilience in India and Nepal, and community-led responses to the Covid-19 pandemic.

• CDKN improved the accessibility and quality of climate knowledge on Wikipedia by supporting experts from the global South and Africa. This resulted in 281 articles being improved, 5 new articles created, and over 2,500 edits, with the edited articles receiving 14.6 million to 34.8 million views depending on the specific event.
• The network tailored scientific material from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) for audiences in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. This included producing explainer guides and communications toolkits for the Special Reports on Land and the Ocean and Cryosphere, which generated over 6,500 views on the CDKN website.
• In South America, CDKN facilitated peer learning among gender specialists in Peru, Ecuador, and Chile to mainstream gender into Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) implementation. Peru's experience as the first South American country to develop a gender and climate change action plan (2016) served as a model for Ecuador and Chile.
• CDKN supported the inclusion of marginalized groups in Peru's national climate policy. This led to the formation of a National Committee on Women and Climate Change involving over 60 women, and the election of representatives from 47 Afro-Peruvian organisations to the National Commission on Climate Change.
• In Africa, CDKN worked to integrate climate risks into gender and rural development programming in Namibia and capacity building in Ethiopia. In Namibia, the Vulnerability Risk Assessment tool helped identify women-led projects in the Oshana region, while in Ethiopia, a national cross-sectoral community of practice on gender and climate change was established in May 2021.
• In Asia, CDKN supported inclusive water governance in Nepal and urban resilience in India. In Nepal, water forums (pani chautaris) were institutionalised in Dhulikhel and Dharan, and in India, peri-urban ecosystem concepts were integrated into university curricula and official training modules for local governments via the National Institute of Disaster Management.
• In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, CDKN collaborated with the International Centre for Climate Change and Development and the Global Resilience Partnership to publish 45 stories highlighting grassroots community leadership and resilience in Asia, the Pacific, Africa, and Latin America.
