Weaving knowledge and action on climate change Impacts from CDKN’s Knowledge Accelerator, 2018-2021

This report details the achievements of the Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN) from 2018 to 2021, focusing on its 'knowledge-into-action' services. The program shifted leadership to an alliance of non-profit organisations based in the global South to provide tailored climate knowledge and support for policy design and implementation in developing countries.

• CDKN improved the accessibility and quality of climate information on Wikipedia by supporting experts from the global South and women. This effort resulted in 281 improved articles, 5 new articles, and over 2,500 edits, with the articles edited during the Africa edit-a-thon reaching 34.8 million views by June 2021.
• The network tailored scientific material from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) for audiences in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. This included producing explainer guides and communications toolkits based on Special Reports on Land and the Ocean and Cryosphere, which generated over 6,500 views on the CDKN website.
• In South America, CDKN facilitated peer learning among gender specialists in Peru, Ecuador, and Chile to mainstream gender into Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) implementation. Peru's 2016 gender and climate change action plan served as a model for Ecuador and Chile.
• CDKN supported the inclusion of marginalized groups in Peru's national climate policy. This led to the formation of the National Committee on Women and Climate Change, involving over 60 women, and the election of representatives from 47 Afro-Peruvian organisations to the National Commission on Climate Change.
• In Namibia, CDKN worked with the University of Namibia to integrate climate risks into the project portfolios of the Ministries of Gender and Rural Development. This included using a Vulnerability Risk Assessment tool in the Oshana region to identify women-led projects for financial support.
• In Ethiopia, CDKN supported the establishment of a national cross-sectoral community of practice on gender and climate change, involving sectors such as finance, agriculture, and urban development. They also developed a gender training toolkit and an illustrated card game for role-playing climate hazards.
• In Nepal, CDKN supported the Southasia Institute of Advanced Studies to institutionalize inclusive urban water governance in the cities of Dhulikhel and Dharan through the use of water forums (pani chautaris). Recommendations from these forums were integrated into Dhulikhel’s water security plan.
• In India, CDKN partnered with the Gorakhpur Environmental Action Group to integrate peri-urban ecosystem concepts into university curricula and develop training modules for the National Institute of Disaster Management to be used in official training for local governments.
