INSIDE STORY: Bangladesh’s comprehensive disaster management programme

Bangladesh has implemented a comprehensive disaster management programme to address frequent natural hazards, such as tropical cyclones and salinity intrusion, which affect approximately 10 million citizens annually. The programme focuses on risk reduction and climate change adaptation across two phases: a pilot phase (2004–2009) targeting seven districts with a budget of US$27.12 million, and a second phase (2010–14) with over US$70 million in donor commitments to institutionalise these practices across all government levels. Key outputs include a Disaster Management Information Centre, Community Risk Assessments, and capacity building initiatives.
