Climate resilient development: experience from an African capacity development programme

This learning brief details a capacity development programme focused on water security and climate resilient development across eight African countries, highlighting the investment in learning materials and the resulting increase in initiatives to integrate climate change into national planning.

• A capacity development programme on water security and climate resilient development was implemented across eight African countries, involving approximately 140 participants and 30 lecturers/mentors through more than 50 workshops. The programme invested in learning materials in English, French, and Portuguese, as well as the creation of national lecturing and management units to foster local ownership.
• While the ability to integrate climate change considerations into national planning and promote water security remains limited in most of the eight participating countries, the programme led to increased knowledge among participants and institutions and sparked ongoing initiatives to include climate change in national development efforts.
• There is potential to extend the programme in the current countries or expand to new ones, with the cost per participant expected to decrease in future iterations due to existing investments in training of trainers (ToT) and learning materials.
