Outlook : Pakistan Special Edition

Pakistan is highly vulnerable to climate change, particularly through erratic monsoons and melting glaciers affecting the Indus River system. Following devastating floods in 2010 that displaced 20 million people, the government established disaster management authorities and a National Climate Change Policy in 2012. CDKN is currently supporting the country in implementing low-carbon development and disaster risk reduction across various regions, including Punjab and the Hindukush Range.

• Pakistan is characterized as one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change despite being among the world's lowest emitters of greenhouse gases. This vulnerability is linked to a high dependency on the Indus River system, which is affected by an erratic monsoon and glaciers that are melting increasingly fast.
• Severe flooding events have driven government action in Pakistan. The 2010 floods displaced 20 million people and caused thousands of deaths. In response, the government established the federal Ministry of Climate Change, National and Provincial Disaster Management Authorities, and adopted a National Climate Change Policy in 2012.
• Recent climate impacts include flash floods in the mountainous northern regions, such as in Chitral in the Hindukush Range, where entire villages have been washed away. Experts anticipate these events will increase in intensity and frequency.
