CONSERVATION AND ADAPTATION IN ASIA’S HIGH MOUNTAINS (2012-2017)
Summary
The AHM Project (2012-2017) implemented a climate-smart approach to conservation across 10 demonstration sites in six Asian countries. Key achievements include bringing 2.6 million hectares of land under improved management, benefiting 19,000 people through conflict mitigation with snow leopards, and developing climate-smart landscape and watershed management plans to support the Global Snow Leopard and Ecosystem Protection Program (GSLEP).
Key insights
- The AHM Project achieved significant conservation and community impacts, including placing 2.6 million hectares of land under improved management and providing human-snow leopard conflict mitigation measures that benefited 19,000 people.
- The project conducted hydrological and climate modelling across all six AHM landscapes to identify snow leopard climate refuges and the links between the species' range and water provision.
- The project produced specific policy and planning tools, including a report on snow leopard crime (2003-2016) covering 12 range countries, climate vulnerability assessments for India, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, and Pakistan, and model climate-smart landscape management plans for Nepal and Kyrgyzstan.
