- Emissions growth between 2000 and 2005 was most significant in the power and transport sectors, as well as in the iron & steel (37% growth) and cement (39% growth) industry sub-sectors. Developing countries are now the primary source of emissions for industry and electricity & heat, while developed countries still account for the majority of emissions in building use and transport.
- Emissions of high global warming potential (GWP) gases grew by 44% on a CO2-equivalent basis between 2000 and 2005. This growth was driven by semiconductor manufacturing, increasing electricity use (specifically SF6 from transmission equipment), and the production of ODS substitutes, the latter of which is more prevalent in developed countries due to the Montreal Protocol.
