CLIMATE FINANCE IN THE PACIFIC: AN OVERVIEW OF FLOWS TO THE REGION

Between 2010 and 2014, the Republic of the Marshall Islands received US$7.9 million in grant-equivalent finance specifically targeting climate change, with the Global Environment Facility and Australia as the primary sources. Mitigation activities received the largest share of this funding (50.8%), followed by adaptation (44.4%).

• From 2010 to 2014, the Republic of the Marshall Islands was allocated US$7.9 million in grant or grant-equivalent finance for climate change objectives, while an additional US$6.5 million in Official Development Assistance (ODA) for other objectives was reported as having climate change co-benefits.
• Of the US$7.9 million dedicated to climate change, 50.8% (US$4 million) was allocated to mitigation, 44.4% (US$3.5 million) to adaptation, and 4.8% (US$0.4 million) to both objectives.
• The Global Environment Facility (GEF) and Australia were the largest sources of climate finance. The GEF primarily funded 'environmental policy', whereas Australian contributions spanned environmental research, drinking water supply, and disaster prevention and preparedness.
