Determinants of Smallholder Farmers' Adaptation Strategies to Climate Change in the Semi-Arid Nguru Local Government Area Northeastern Nigeria

The study identifies nine significant variables that determine how smallholder farmers in Nguru, Nigeria, adapt to climate change, finding that agricultural labor force has the strongest positive influence on adaptation strategies.

• A stepwise multiple linear regression model identified nine variables that significantly determine the adoption of climate change adaptation strategies: agricultural labor force, level of education of the household head, land tenure arrangements, gender of the household head, extension service availability, out-migration of labor, years of farming experience, household size, and availability of farmer to farmer extension.
• Most of the identified variables have a positive influence on adaptation strategies, with the exception of gender and out-migration of labor.
• The agricultural labor force is the most influential factor in adaptation, suggesting a policy need to promote adaptation strategies that are more remunerative and less labor-intensive to improve farm plot management.
