RÉALISATIONS PHARES DU PROJET AFRICAN ACTIVISTS FOR CLIMATE JUSTICE AU SÉNÉGAL

The African Activists for Climate Justice (AACJ) project, implemented by a consortium including Natural Justice, Oxfam, and others, has worked in Senegal from May 2021 to December 2025 to democratize climate debate and promote inter- and intra-generational climate justice. Key achievements include the creation of six influential networks for women, youth, and local officials, the production of 18 community narratives (podcasts, videos, and comics), and the legal empowerment of communities facing extractive industries. The project has facilitated community participation in national policies such as the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) and the National Adaptation Plan, while supporting legal actions and the recognition of Indigenous and Community Conserved Areas (ICCAs) in biodiversity legislation.

• The AACJ consortium established six autonomous and sustainable networks in Senegal to promote climate justice, including the Réseau des Acteurs Sénégalais sur le Climat (RESAC), the Réseau des Jeunes Engagés pour la Préservation de l’Environnement et du Climat (JEPEC), and the Réseau National des Elus Locaux pour la Justice Climatique (RENEL-JC).
• To challenge narratives dominated by the Global North, the project co-created and disseminated 18 community narratives using formats such as podcasts, videos, and comic books, translated into multiple languages to foster collective action.
• The project improved legal access for communities affected by extractive industries and energy infrastructure, leading to at least five legal disputes initiated by communities and the legal recognition of APAC (Indigenous and Community Conserved Areas) in a draft biodiversity law.
• In Bambey, the project supported local leadership in adaptation planning, resulting in the co-construction of a community adaptation fund and the pursuit of a local convention for managing community forests.
• The project enabled 8,304 beneficiaries to engage in lobbying and advocacy, influencing key national documents including the Green Budget, the National Adaptation Plan (PNA), the Nationally Determined Contribution (CDN), and the National Strategy for Gender Equality and Equity (SNEEG).
• Community action supported by the project successfully froze or suspended controversial projects, such as the expansion of the ICS mining front in Meoune and land subdivisions in the classified forest and filao strips in Cayar.
