March Our Lives: Live a Decent, Dignified and Healthy Life

A statement by the Natural Justice mediated Climate Justice Movement of Nigeria calling for urgent climate action and inclusive governance to address the intensifying impact of floods and desertification in Nigeria.

• Nigeria has experienced a significant escalation in flood severity, with the 2022 floods surpassing the 2012 floods in scale. The 2012 event affected 30 of 36 states and caused 361 deaths, while the 2022 floods affected nearly all 36 states and the federal capital territory, resulting in 604 deaths and an estimated $6.5 billion in destroyed property and public infrastructure according to the National emergency management agency.
• The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) predicts that floods in the current year will be more severe than those of 2022, attributing this trend to human-triggered climate change.
• Climate change-driven desertification and droughts have led to fatal conflicts over arable land for farming and livestock among farmers, herdsmen, and communities in the north east, north west, and north central regions of Nigeria.
• The movement demands that the Nigerian government implement inclusive climate solutions by expanding state and local government flood response committees to include women, youth, and persons with disabilities, and converting these committees into state climate change advisory councils to develop transition plans for the social, agriculture, environment, and energy sectors.
