Boko Haram in the Lake Chad Basin Major events timeline

The document outlines the evolution of Boko Haram from its 2009 clashes with security forces to its split into factions and the emergence of ISIS-WA. Key milestones include the 2014 abduction of over 200 Chibok school girls, the expansion of attacks into Niger, Chad, and Cameroon, and the subsequent military efforts by Nigeria to reclaim territory, including the clearance of the Sambisa Forest camp in 2017.

• Boko Haram's activity evolved from internal Nigerian clashes in 2009 to regional expansion and the formation of an international affiliate. The group launched its first attacks in Niger and Chad in 2012 and pledged allegiance to the Islamic State in 2015, becoming ISIS-WA.
• The group's operations were characterized by mass abductions and territorial control, notably the abduction of more than 200 Chibok school girls in 2014 and a program of mass territorial control that led to a major humanitarian crisis.
• The movement experienced internal fragmentation, specifically a split where Abubakar Shekau was replaced as head of ISIS-WA by al-Barnawi, leading Shekau to lead a faction under the name JAS.
