Zimbabwe: Introduction

This introductory research paper provides a geographic, political, and demographic overview of Zimbabwe, detailing its landlocked position in Southern Africa, its ethnic composition, and its transition from independence in 1980 through the leadership of Robert Mugabe to Emmerson Mnangagwa.

• Zimbabwe is a landlocked, lower-middle-income country in Southern Africa covering 390,757 square kilometres. It is bordered by Zambia, Mozambique, South Africa, and Botswana, with a centralised government based in the capital, Harare.
• The population of Zimbabwe is primarily composed of the Shona people (approximately 81%) and the Ndebele (about 12%), followed by smaller groups including the Ndau (3%), Tonga (2%), Shangani (0.8%), Venda (0.5%), and Kalanga (0.4%). Populations of European, Indian, Coloured, and East Asian descent have declined over time, particularly the British and European populations, due to emigration following independence in 1980 and the land reform program of the early 2000s.
• Zimbabwe's topography is diverse, featuring the Eastern Highlands and Mount Nyangani in the east, and the Kalahari Basin in the west and southwest. The Zambezi and Limpopo rivers serve as natural boundaries.
• Despite possessing fertile agricultural land and abundant natural resources—specifically lithium, chrome, platinum, diamonds, and gold—Zimbabwe has struggled with human development, political and economic instability, and governance since its independence from Britain on 18 April 1980.
