Review of Current and Planned Adaptation Action in Ghana

This report reviews climate change adaptation in Ghana, noting that while sectoral policies acknowledge risks like rising sea levels and temperature, they lack concrete actions. The National Climate Change Policy and National Climate Change Adaptation Strategy aim to fill this gap, with current projects focusing on the agricultural sector and the vulnerable northern regions. Future goals include strengthening the evidence base and capacity for sub-national and civil society actors.

• Climate change in Ghana is characterized by rising temperatures, rising sea levels, and increasing rainfall variability, which threaten sectors including health, energy, fisheries, water, and agriculture.
• While the Government of Ghana has acknowledged climate change risks within sectoral policies for energy, agriculture, and water, these documents lack concrete actions. To address this, the National Climate Change Adaptation Strategy and the National Climate Change Policy were developed to identify adaptation priorities.
• Adaptation initiatives are currently concentrated in the agricultural sector and the northern regions of Ghana due to the area's high vulnerability and the sector's role in economic growth and poverty reduction. Future priorities include improving the evidence base via monitoring and evaluation and increasing capacity for sub-national actors and civil society networks.
