Achieving Sustainable Food Systems in a Global Crisis: Nigeria

This report provides an evidence-based and costed roadmap for public interventions to transform Nigeria's agriculture and food systems. It focuses on ending hunger, improving the productivity and incomes of small-scale producers, making diets healthier and more affordable, and addressing climate change mitigation and adaptation.

• Nigeria's food systems face multiple simultaneous challenges: providing sufficient food for all, increasing productivity and incomes for small-scale producers, improving diet health and affordability, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and building climate change adaptation capacities.
• Hunger and poverty in Nigeria are projected to increase until 2030, driven by factors including internal conflict, low oil prices, economic slowdown, COVID-19, and rising food and fertilizer prices exacerbated by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
• Demographic growth is expected to intensify food system pressures, with Nigeria's population projected to increase from 206 million in 2020 to 263 million by 2030, leading to higher demand for food and greater diversity in food choices.
• The report utilizes a computable general equilibrium (CGE) model to estimate the costs associated with ending hunger, doubling small-scale producer incomes, transitioning to healthier diets, and investing in climate protection and adaptation.
