Sustainable Asset Valuation of Parques del Río Norte in Medellín, Colombia

This report provides an economic valuation of the Parques del Río Norte expansion project in Medellín, Colombia, which aims to restore urban green space to mitigate the effects of climate change and rapid urbanization.

• The expansion of Parques del Río Norte, led by the Secretariat of Physical Infrastructure (SIF) of Medellín and the C40 Cities Finance Facility (CFF), is designed to address urban heat islands, water pollution, flooding, and river erosion.
• An integrated cost-benefit analysis indicates that the park project would yield a return of USD 1.67 for every dollar invested over a 30-year period. These benefits encompass improved environmental quality, reduced flood risk, increased property values and retail revenue, and better human health and well-being resulting from improved air quality and physical activity.
• The report recommends investing in nature-based infrastructure (NBI) along the river to reduce flood damages, maintaining the park continuously to ensure optimal benefits, and using Medellín as a scalable model for addressing urban challenges via NBI.
