Nature-Based Solutions for Adaptation in Uganda

This report provides an inventory of nature-based solutions (NbS) for adaptation implemented in Uganda from 2015 to 2026, analyzing how ecosystem-based interventions address climate vulnerability and biodiversity challenges across various landscapes.

• Nature-based solutions for adaptation in Uganda are distributed across a variety of ecosystems rather than being dominated by one, including mountains, peatlands, river systems, savannah, protected areas, forest landscapes, and wetlands and associated catchments.
• NbS projects in Uganda address coupled societal challenges, where issues such as water stress, food insecurity, declining agricultural production, pressure on biodiversity, degradation of ecosystem services, and exposure to droughts and floods frequently occur together.
• From a biodiversity standpoint, most Ugandan NbS focus on reducing habitat degradation, forest loss, riverbank erosion, wetland encroachment, catchment decline, and invasive species pressure, rather than species-specific conservation.
• Social inclusion within the NbS portfolio is uneven, with only some projects demonstrating gender-responsive design, focus on marginalized groups, women's participation, or targeted livelihood benefits.
