- Andean glaciers between 17-55°S have generally retreated over the last century. Specifically, the Southern Patagonian Ice Field lost approximately 1,000 km² (about 7%) of its cover between 1944 and 2009, with the annual loss rate doubling in the last 25 years.
- In the Caribbean, historical data spanning 1,500 years indicates that hurricane activity peaked during the medieval period (c. 900-1100 AD) and again after 1850, particularly after 1980. Current warming trends suggest a higher frequency of hurricanes in the future.
- Sea level rise is predicted to be between 18-59 cm by 2100. In the United States, 19 million people (6.4% of the population) live within one kilometer of the coast. In the Caribbean, at least 20% of the population in the Bahamas, Belize, and Guadeloupe would be impacted if the sea level rose by 6 meters.
- Coffee producers in Mesoamerica perceive market fluctuations as a greater threat to their livelihoods than climate change, despite documented increases in nighttime and maximum temperatures.
- In the Chaco region of central Argentina, undisturbed dry forests store 187 tons of carbon per hectare, with 71% of this biomass located underground. Traditional land use, such as selective wood extraction and moderate grazing, allows for land use while continuing to capture soil carbon.
