The impact of land cover and land use changes on the hydro-climate of the La Plata Basin (CRN2094)

This fact sheet describes a research project initiated at the end of 2008 to investigate how expanding agriculture and forestry, and the resulting land use and cover changes, impact the regional hydroclimate of the La Plata Basin and interact with climate change.

• The project aims to develop 25-year datasets combining in-situ and remotely sensed observations to model how land use changes affect the La Plata basin's hydroclimate, specifically focusing on the intensity and length of droughts and floods, as well as soil moisture, infiltration, and runoff.
• Initial results involve using 1980-2005 datasets for regional land surface re-analysis within a Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) modeling system, which includes simulations for various land cover scenarios ranging from no agriculture to intensive arable agriculture.
• The project has introduced a new methodology called Ecosystem Functional Types (EFTs) to investigate year-to-year evolution in land cover, intended to replace time-fixed land cover types in regional models.
