SAEMC: South American emissions, megacities and climate (CRN2017)

The SAEMC (South American emissions, megacities and climate) project focuses on developing regional climate change scenarios and operational chemical weather forecasting tools to address deteriorating air quality in South American megacities.

• The SAEMC project aims to establish operational chemical weather forecasting for South American megacities, provide regional emission and climate change scenarios, and expand a research network for Earth System Modeling in the Americas.
• Initial project results include the compilation of an online emission database for Bogotá, Buenos Aires, Lima, Medellín, Santiago, and São Paulo, with Medellín's data already available. Additionally, the Chilean Weather Office has implemented chemical weather forecasting for Santiago based on SAEMC's work.
• The project is developing traffic emission and aerosol inventories, including black carbon particles, for Bogotá, Buenos Aires, and São Paulo, as traffic emissions are significant contributors to pollutants in all megacities.
