SAEMC: South American emissions, megacities and climate (CRN2017)

The SAEMC project focuses on improving air quality management in South American megacities by establishing operational chemical weather forecasting and developing regional emission and climate change scenarios. Key achievements include the creation of an online emission database for cities such as Bogotá, Buenos Aires, Lima, Medellín, Santiago, and São Paulo, and the implementation of chemical weather forecasting for Santiago by the Chilean Weather Office. The project has also operationalized a linked climate modeling system for South America and is developing traffic and aerosol emission inventories for Bogotá, Buenos Aires, and São Paulo.

• The SAEMC project has compiled an online emission database for the megacities of Bogotá, Buenos Aires, Lima, Medellín, Santiago, and São Paulo to facilitate the development of automated emission scenarios, with data already available for Medellín.
• The project has achieved several operational milestones, including the implementation of chemical weather forecasting for Santiago via the Chilean Weather Office and the creation of a fully linked climate modeling system for South America to compare emissions.
• Efforts to manage air pollution include the construction of urbanization maps for major Brazilian cities using satellite imagery and the development of inventories for aerosols, including black carbon particles, and traffic emissions for Bogotá, Buenos Aires, and São Paulo.
