Electric Vehicles

The report identifies four primary investment opportunities for electric vehicles (EVs) in South Africa: electric micro-mobility for last-mile delivery, electrification of public transportation, electrification of freight and logistics, and local manufacturing of private passenger vehicles. While high capital expenditure (CAPEX) and energy security concerns related to loadshedding remain significant barriers, rising fuel prices are improving the operational business case for fleet electrification. The South African government is supporting the transition through the December 2023 Electric Vehicle White Paper and a planned investment allowance starting March 1, 2026, to encourage local production, with the first battery EVs expected by 2026.

• The South African EV market is diversifying beyond private passenger vehicles, with battery EV sales increasing by 85.46% from 502 vehicles in 2022 to 931 in 2023, including the first recorded sales of electric trucks and light delivery vehicles (LDVs).
• Electric micro-mobility for last-mile delivery is identified as the sector with the highest ease of market entry. The projected 2030 market size is valued at R2 billion for electric bicycles, R4.5 billion for electric motorcycles, and R7.5 billion for electric three-wheelers.
