Resilient Agriculture Innovations for Nature (RAIN) Challenge Guidelines for Applicants

The Resilient Agriculture Innovations for Nature (RAIN) Challenge is an initiative by the Global Resilience Partnership (GRP) and Munich Re Foundation to identify and scale nature-positive agricultural innovations in East Africa. The program provides selected not-for-profit organizations with mentoring, leadership training, and communications support to transform seed-level ideas into sustainable business models attractive to private investors.

• The RAIN Challenge targets not-for-profit organizations, including public entities, local civil society, international NGOs, and academia, specifically those operating as start-ups, hubs, or accelerators in East Africa.
• The program seeks 'nature positive' solutions that protect biodiversity, build resilience for vulnerable populations, and incorporate gender, equity, and human rights. Nature positive solutions are defined as those that provide benefits such as 'conservation, biodiversity gains, CO2 capture' and support a circular economy.
• Winners receive a comprehensive support package including up to 24 hours of mentoring over three months, access to a Leadership Academy based on executive management practices, and a customized social media toolkit for communications.
• The selection process involves a scoring system (maximum 100 points) based on six criteria: Innovativeness (0-15), Potential for impact (0-15), Equity (0-15), Scalability (0-15), Viability and Sustainability (0-15), and Team Composition/Organisation (0-15), with an additional 10 points for Risk assessment.
• Financial support is structured in stages: winners receive a cash prize after the initial mentoring and Leadership Academy, and those who graduate and meet pre-agreed criteria receive 'next stage funding' for implementation and scaling over a subsequent 12-month period.
