RESILIENT AGRICULTURE INNOVATIONS FOR NATURE (RAIN) CHALLENGE

The Resilient Agriculture Innovations for Nature (RAIN) challenge is a joint initiative by the Global Resilience Partnership (GRP) and Shockwave Foundation to identify and scale nature-positive agricultural innovations in East Africa. The program provides selected entrepreneurs and organizations with mentoring, leadership training, communications support, and funding of up to 50,000 USD to make their projects 'funding-ready' for private investors.

• The RAIN challenge targets nature-positive agricultural solutions in East Africa, specifically in Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda, to convert seed-level ideas into sustainable businesses attractive to private investors.
• Winners of the challenge will receive a cash prize of up to 50,000 USD, which is awarded after the completion of an initial mentoring period and the Leadership Academy, intended for project implementation and scaling over 12 months.
• The support program for winners includes up to 24 hours of mentoring over three months (8 hours per month), a Leadership Academy based on executive management practices, and communications support to amplify their projects.
• Applications are evaluated on a 100-point scale across seven criteria: potential for impact (20), level of innovation (15), equity (15), additionality (15), potential for profitability (10), team (15), and risk (10).
• The selection process involves screening for eligibility, review by two assessors (including a reference marker), and shortlisting applications with a score above 60, from which 6 to 10 winners are chosen.
• The challenge defines 'Nature Positive' solutions as those that not only avoid harm and build resilience but actively provide benefits such as biodiversity gains, CO2 capture, and the nurturing of a circular economy.
• Key dates for the third round of the challenge include an opening on 11 December 2024, a submission deadline of 31 January 2025, and the announcement of winners in June 2025.
