RESILIENT AGRICULTURE INNOVATIONS FOR NATURE (RAIN) CHALLENGE

The Resilient Agriculture Innovations for Nature (RAIN) challenge, a partnership between the Global Resilience Partnership (GRP) and Shockwave Foundation, supports agricultural entrepreneurs in East Africa. The program identifies nature-positive, scalable solutions that build climate resilience and protect biodiversity while offering a profitable revenue model. Selected winners (between 6 and 10 submissions) receive a comprehensive support package including up to 24 hours of mentoring, access to a Leadership Academy, communications support, and monitoring, evaluation and learning (MEL) assistance. Successful graduates who meet pre-agreed criteria are eligible for a cash prize of up to 50,000 USD for implementation and scaling over 12 months. Applications are assessed on a 100-point scale covering impact, innovation, equity, additionality, profitability, team experience, and risk.

• The RAIN challenge targets nature-positive agricultural solutions in specific East African countries: Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda.
• Eligible initiatives must be nature-positive, meaning they go beyond doing no harm to provide active benefits such as biodiversity gains, CO2 capture, and the restoration of nature, while remaining profitable.
• Winners receive a support package designed to make projects 'funding-ready', consisting of up to 24 hours of mentoring over three months, a Leadership Academy, and connections to investors.
• Winning projects that graduate from the challenge and meet specific criteria are awarded a cash prize of up to 50,000 USD for scaling and implementation over a 12-month period.
• The selection process involves a 100-point scoring system based on seven criteria: potential for impact (20), level of innovation (15), equity (15), additionality (15), potential for profitability (10), team (15), and risk (10).
• The program employs a specific four-step framework for project development, utilizing a Value Chain Driven Viability Analysis and a Resilience and Scaling assessment.
