Resilient Agriculture Innovations for Nature (RAIN) Challenge Guidelines for Applicants

The Resilient Agriculture Innovations for Nature (RAIN) challenge, a partnership between the Global Resilience Partnership (GRP) and Shockwave Foundation, supports agricultural entrepreneurs in East Africa. The program identifies seed-level innovative ideas that build resilience and protect biodiversity, providing winners with mentoring, leadership training, and investment brokering to make their projects 'funding-ready'. Between 6 and 10 winners will be selected based on criteria including impact, innovation, equity, and profitability, receiving support from March to December 2023 and potential next-stage funding for implementation and scaling.

• The RAIN challenge targets agricultural innovations in East Africa, specifically Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda, to convert seed-level ideas into sustainable businesses that attract private investors.
• Eligible solutions must be 'nature positive', meaning they do not cause harm, are climate smart, build resilience, and provide active benefits such as biodiversity gains, CO2 capture, or the promotion of a circular economy.
• Winners of the challenge will receive a comprehensive support package including up to 24 hours of mentoring over three months, communications support via a social media toolkit, and access to a Leadership Academy based on executive management development practices.
• The selection process involves screening for eligibility and a scoring system (maximum 100 points) based on potential for impact (20), level of innovation (15), equity (15), additionality (15), team experience (15), potential for profitability (10), and risk (10).
• Between 6 and 10 winners will be selected from applicants scoring above 60 points. Those who graduate from the challenge and meet pre-agreed criteria will receive next-stage funding for implementation and scaling over a 12-month period.
