BELLAGIO STATEMENT

The Bellagio Statement identifies three critical action areas for transforming food systems in vulnerable regions: halting agricultural land degradation and expansion, promoting diverse and nutritious food landscapes, and linking food system resilience to regional stability and peace. It calls for a shift from productivity-focused approaches to resilience-based strategies, emphasizing the role of soil health, nature-based solutions, and the need for innovation that is inclusive of gender and equity. The statement aims to inform global frameworks, including the UN Secretary General’s Climate Summit and the Global Commission on Adaptation.

• Innovation for food system transformation is defined as adding practical, sustainable, and resilient value at scale, and must be owned by governments, communities, and the private sector while fundamentally considering gender and equity.
