Water Governance for Resilient Food Systems for Future Climates

A group of 31 practitioners and researchers issued a statement for the 2021 United Nations Food Systems Summit (UNFSS) outlining six focus areas for water resilient food systems: systems thinking, inclusive governance, continual innovation, diversity and redundancy, system preparedness, and long-term planning. They emphasize that this transformation requires significant investment and collaboration between governments, the private sector, and diverse community groups, including smallholder farmers.

• A group of 31 practitioners and researchers propose six critical focus areas to establish a foundation for water resilient food systems: treating the food system as an interconnected system across agricultural, environment, energy, and land-use sectors; adopting multi-level inclusive governance and participatory approaches to improve adaptability to local water security threats; enabling innovation in technology, knowledge, incentive systems, and financial instruments; incorporating diversity and redundancy in agricultural production techniques; ensuring system preparedness through data transparency and accountability; and planning for long-term system changes using a strong evidence base.
• Achieving a water resilient food system requires significant investments, the application of existing research, the generation of new knowledge, and collaborative efforts between governments, the private sector, communities, women, youth, and smallholder farmers.
