Water Governance for Resilient Food Systems for Future Climates

A group of 31 practitioners and researchers proposes six critical focus areas to build water-resilient food systems: systems thinking, inclusive governance, continual innovation, diversity and redundancy, system preparedness, and long-term planning.

• The authors propose six foundational focus areas for water-resilient food systems: treating the food system as an interconnected system across agricultural, environment, energy, and land-use sectors; adopting multi-level inclusive governance and participatory approaches; enabling innovation in technology, incentives, and financial instruments; incorporating socio-ecological complexity and diversity in production techniques; focusing on system preparedness and data transparency; and planning for long-term resilience over present-day stresses.
• Achieving a water-resilient food system requires significant investment, the application of existing research, and the generation of new knowledge through collaboration between governments, the private sector, communities, women, youth, and smallholder farmers.
