Dear Partners in Resilience

A year-end statement from Nathanial Matthews of the Global Resilience Partnership (GRP) reviewing the organization's 2023 activities, highlighting partnerships in climate adaptation, private sector engagement, and resilience measurement.

• The Global Resilience Partnership (GRP) observed increased global commitments to resilience at COP28, including the Global Goal on Adaptation, the Global Stocktake, and a Call to Action from eleven leading philanthropic funders to accelerate climate adaptation.
• The Resilient Agricultural Innovations for Nature (RAIN) Challenge, supported by the Munich Re Foundation and Shockwave Foundation, implemented community-led innovations in Rwanda, Kenya, and Uganda, including road runoff harvesting, capacity development, and the use of earthworms for organic fertiliser.
• Private sector engagement in climate adaptation grew significantly, with the PREPARE Call to Action expanding to 31 companies by COP28. A report by BCG, GRP, and USAID indicates that every dollar invested in adaptation and resilience can yield between $2 and $15 in financial benefits, and that investing companies earn a median valuation of 9 times their revenue, with some reaching 77 times.
• GRP and USAID co-hosted the Resilience Evidence Forum in Cape Town, South Africa, which attended by over 1,200 professionals to discuss resilience strategies and evidence-based solutions. Additionally, the Knowledge into Use awards provided 100,000 SEK each to three winners for innovative ways of using resilience knowledge.
• GRP collaborated with the Stockholm Resilience Centre on a science brief regarding the food crisis and continued its work with the Ocean Risk and Resilience Action Alliance, including the third Ocean Risk Innovation Challenge and a report on the role of sand in the oceanic system.
