Expanding these plants would require 62 billion dollars, but only 9.7 billion dollars are allocated to projects under construction. Nigeria and South Africa have the highest estimated investment needs at 21.2 billion and 16.3 billion dollars, respectively.
- Despite the push for gas, Africa faces a severe electricity access crisis, with 43% of the population (600 million people) lacking access. The report notes a stark contrast in annual per capita electricity consumption: 185 kWh in Sub-Saharan Africa (excluding South Africa) compared to 6,500 kWh in Europe and 12,700 kWh in the United States.
- Current operational gas power capacity in Africa is 109.2 GW, with Egypt being the largest consumer at 51.6 GW. While 64.2 GW of additional capacity is in development, only 10.5 GW is currently under construction.
