Green Jobs in Mongolia

This fact sheet provides an overview of Mongolia's transition toward a green economy, highlighting its current progress, environmental challenges, and the roles of government, private sector, and international partners in implementing sustainable development.

• A 2018 report ranked Mongolia's progress toward a green economy as 3 out of 10.
• Mongolia faces several critical environmental and social challenges, including air pollution, land degradation and desertification, water pollution and mismanagement, poverty, inequality, a knowledge gap, and increasing urbanization.
• The Mongolian economy is heavily reliant on mining, which accounts for 81.9% of total exports and 18.5% of real GDP.
• Government initiatives for a green transition include the National Green Development Policy (2014), the Sustainable Development Vision 2030 (2016), tax exemptions for renewables, and the goal for five provinces to become model green provinces.
• Private sector and international efforts include the operation of five wind farms, four hydropower stations, and three solar farms, as well as ADB financing to convert 'Ger' areas in Ulaanbaatar into low-carbon eco-districts.
