Avons-nous besoin d’un désastre naturel pour nous rendre meilleurs et changer la façon dont nous vivons sur cette planète?

The author highlights the devastating floods in the Balkans and the collapse of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet as evidence of the urgent need for global societal and economic restructuring. Despite the solidarity shown during disasters, the author criticizes Balkan governments for continuing to build coal-fired power plants for export. The text calls for the elimination of fossil fuels, a reduction in energy consumption, and a move away from the current consumption-based economic model to ensure survival and sustainability.

• Scientists have warned that the West Antarctic Ice Sheet is currently collapsing, which could eventually lead to a sea-level rise of up to 4 meters, causing severe consequences for coastlines.
• Severe rainfall in the Balkans, specifically in Bosnia, Serbia, and Croatia, resulted in three months' worth of rain falling in three days, causing widespread flooding and landslides.
• Governments in the Balkans are actively promoting the construction of new coal-fired power plants, primarily to export energy to high-consuming European countries rather than for local use, while community renewable energy projects are nearly non-existent.
• To build a sustainable society and avoid global disaster, the author asserts that the world must move away from fossil fuels—especially coal—reduce energy consumption, address consumption inequalities, and abandon the current consumption-based economic model.
