• Recent scientific warnings indicate that the collapse of the West Antarctic ice sheet is underway, which could eventually lead to a sea-level rise of up to 4 meters, causing dramatic negative consequences for coastlines and human life.
• Severe rainfall in the Balkans resulted in three months' worth of rain falling in three days, causing widespread flooding in Bosnia, Serbia, and Croatia across an area larger than Wales. Bosnia and Herzegovina were particularly affected by landslides that destroyed infrastructure and displaced landmines from the 1990s war.
• Despite the humanitarian solidarity shown during the floods, governments in the Balkans are continuing to promote new coal-fired power plants, primarily for export to high-consuming European countries rather than for local use, while community renewable energy projects are almost non-existent.
• To build a sustainable, low-carbon future, the author argues that the global community must move beyond fossil fuels—specifically coal—reduce energy consumption, address consumption inequalities, and abandon the current consumption-based economic model, which is described as damaging to both society and the environment.
