POR QUE PROTEGER A AMAZÔNIA?

This fact sheet from the Climate Policy Initiative argues that protecting the Amazon is essential for Brazil's economic growth and demonstrates that anti-deforestation policies are effective without harming agricultural production.

• Between 2004 and 2018, there was an 80% reduction in deforestation while agricultural production in the Legal Amazon continued to grow.
• Four specific policy innovations contributed to reducing deforestation: satellite monitoring and enforcement, the identification of priority municipalities, conditional rural credit, and the creation of protected territories. Satellite monitoring, which allows for near real-time detection, is cited as the primary factor in the decline of deforestation rates, preventing the annual destruction of approximately 27,000 km2 of forest.
• Protecting the Amazon provides three primary benefits: the guarantee of ecosystem services and productivity, the combatting of crime and protection of Brazilian heritage, and the promotion of access to international markets.
