A study by NAPC/CPI found that rural settlements were responsible for 30% of deforestation in the Amazon region in 2014. Notably, Environmentally Differentiated Settlement Projects (PAADs), designed for sustainable production, accounted for 15% of total Amazon deforestation, representing half of the impact caused by all rural settlements.

• Environmentally Differentiated Settlement Projects (PAADs), which are intended to support sustainable production and extractive activities, contributed 15% of the total deforestation in the Amazon in 2014, which is half of the total deforestation caused by all rural settlements.
• The area covered by rural settlements in the Amazon increased by more than 70% between 2002 and 2014, growing from 220,200 km² (4.8% of the territory) to 376,000 km² (8.3% of the territory).
• While large-scale deforestation decreased by 80% between 2004 and 2014 due to the DETER satellite monitoring system, small-scale deforestation increased during the same period because it is more difficult to identify.
