Finanças e bioeconomia: a hora da ação no G-20

A statement by several organizations urging the G-20, under Brazil's presidency, to operationalize a bioeconomy through high-level principles and increased financing to promote climate and nature-positive economic models.

• Brazil has established a Bioeconomy Initiative during its G-20 presidency focused on three pillars: science, technology and innovation; sustainable use of biodiversity; and the role of bioeconomy in sustainable development. The goal is to develop high-level principles to align member economies toward equity and sustainability, which are expected to be included in the Rio Declaration in November.
• There is a significant gap in climate financing. While the Climate Policy Initiative estimates a need for US$ 8.1 trillion annually starting in 2030, the average annual value between 2021 and 2022 was US$ 1.3 trillion, representing only 1% of global GDP.
• A group of 21 organizations from the private sector, academia, and NGOs is supporting the Bioeconomy Initiative. This group released a preliminary survey on G-20 bioeconomy strategies in May and plans to launch a study on financing challenges and solutions in September to inform the Biodiversity Conference in Colombia and COP-30 in Belém.
• The document argues that the bioeconomy can allow nature-rich countries, particularly in the Global South, to generate wealth and reduce inequalities by treating biodiversity as a driver of development models.
